Over the weekend, the New Zealand racing community lost one of its brightest stars with the passing of Loire, the bay mare whose spirit, pedigree, and unforgettable performances made her a standout on and off the track. She was eight years old.

Bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor of Trelawney Stud, Loire was born to be special. By the champion sire Redoute's Choice (AUS) out of multiple producing Group One mare Syrah (NZ), she carried a pedigree steeped in class — and lived up to every ounce of it.

From the moment she stepped onto the track, Loire had a presence that couldn't be ignored, sometimes a little quirky but an abundance of talent

"She was a wonderful, kind and loving mare loved by everyone who had anything to do with her," says Cherry Taylor.

Her passing is a heartbreak for the team at Trelawney Stud as even when ill she was a wonderful kind mare and a favourite with all that cared for her.

It's never easy to say goodbye to a horse like Loire — one who gave so much, who carried hopes, and who reminded us of the magic that thoroughbreds can bring.

"She was a great type from a wonderful family; the same family as Pride of Jenni. She was a Group One winner of the 1000 Guineas, sister to another Group One winner. She also went to Frankel twice and produced a filly first which is a 2 year old Folle Blanche, in work now with Tony Pike," added Taylor.

"She had a great Frankel yearling colt this year, bought by Ciaron Maher who has kindly let us buy a share in him to race."

Rest in peace, Loire. Thank you for the thrill, the heart, and the glory. You will never be forgotten.

Our many thanks go to Alanna Zantingh and her team from Cambridge Equine Hospital, along with speciality farrier team Paul Murray and Arrum Ali, who worked tirelessly to save our beautiful mare after a paddock accident 4 weeks ago.
