By Brent Taylor, Managing Director – Trelawney Stud
It's with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Warren Huntly, a true gentleman of the racing world, a long-time friend, and a passionate supporter of New Zealand-bred horses.
I first met Warren many years ago alongside his great mate Craig Coglan, when they were racing the talented mare Pernod, trained by Mike Moroney. Pernod brought them immense joy with a string of wins, including success at Group One level. But our connection deepened through her daughter Martini Red, whom Warren and Craig raced with their wives – both, quite charmingly, also named Leanne.
Their regular trips to New Zealand became a cherished tradition. They visited to watch Martini Red race, to spend time with their old friend Pernod, and – in good humour – to attempt to drain my wine cellar at Trelawney. Those visits were always filled with laughter, stories, and Warren's infectious enthusiasm.
Over the years, whether catching up through work or at the races in Victoria, Warren remained the same – a fun-loving, generous spirit, passionate about horses and the people around him. His support of Trelawney and the New Zealand breeding industry was deeply appreciated and never taken for granted.
On behalf of everyone at Trelawney Stud, I extend our deepest sympathies to Leanne and the extended Huntly family. Warren's presence will be sorely missed, but his memory will be warmly carried forward by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Warren.
